I already have
  • Notepad++
  • PSPad
  • RJ TextEd
  • Programmer's Notepad
Do you recommend AkelPad against all listed above ?

  • It's smaller
  • It loads faster
  • It uses less memory

I think that these are two different software categories. Notepad++, PSPad and RJ TextEd are "heavy-duty" text editors. They are all excellent programs (I use PSPad myself), but they're also much heavier than Window's Notepad. Of course that they have many more features.

On the other hand, many times you don't need ALL of the features that those editors provide but simply need a fast text editor that can handle the task. That's the other software category I'm talking about: a lightweight, fast-loading, but full-featured text editor. And that's where AkelPad excels.
A simple example will help to highlight these differences: I'm currently running both AkelPad and PSPad on my PC. AkelPad is using 1188 K of memory, PSPad is using 13024 K. Over 10 times more than AkelPad.
Yet AkelPad has a lot of features for such a small program. On top of what is mentioned in the program's description, please take a look of the additional functionality available through its many plugins.

In conclusion, I do recommend AkelPad over many other lightweight text editors, such as TED Notepad, Notepad2, Savage Ed, Metapad and Minipad2.

As much as I know memory is not much of a concern these days ;) and why should one worry - that too for a text editor?

The features are more important - with capacity to handle multiple language and format. I think "Notepad++" is a wise choice.

Anyway I have provided details of Programmer's Notepad also - just check.

I agree. Most systems today have at least 1 GB of RAM, so memory isn't much of a concern. I simply quoted the memory usage as a way of highlighting the differences I mentioned.

Did you check AkelPad's features? And also the additional features provided by its plugins?
AkelPad can indeed handle multiple languages and formats.
In my case, I associated AkelPad to txt files and use it as a (Windows) Notepad replacement and lightweight text editor. If I happen to need to perform more heavy text editing, then I launch a full blown text editor like PSPad, Notepad++ or RJ TextEd.

I just checked it. Looks like a good program.
