How to avoid or fix problems after LiberKey updates ?

Messagede opendev » 06 Février 2010, 19:07

To all users

Edit: the LiberKey 4.x are no longer supported, the new LiberKey 5.x uses a new architecture that solves the problems below. Thank you to migrate to this new version.

If you follow the advice below (How to avoid this problem?), your LiberKey should always work perfectly.
A lot of users have started with LiberKey 4.0 and have progressively upgraded it to LiberKey 4.7 with all LiberKey patches (which includes LiberKeyTools improvements) and LiberKey updater (for applications). In 20 months, between LiberKey 4.0 and 4.7, we have published 1647 applications updates and most of users have applied all these updates without any problem.
LiberKey 5.0 (a new launcher has been developped from scratch) will allow you to modify categories as you want without problems with updates (upgrade from LiberKey 4.x will be automatic even if it is a complete new architecture).

Problem summary :
You can get problems after applications updates.

The symptoms are:
- Empty window: No active document
- LiberKey menus are empty LiberKey
- Updates of applications are continually re-proposed
- Updates of applications fail
- Duplication of categories

Why this problem?
The LiberKey updater reads information in the file asuite.xml to identify which application should be updated. If you have reorganized the categories, after updates, you can get symptoms mentioned above.

How to avoid this problem?
Never touch the tree between "Audio" and "Video" (and the 2 separators surrounding "Audio" and "Video"). If you have any application to add to LiberKey, always use the category "My programs".

If you have this problem, how to solve it?

1st solution (most appropriate)
You must recover a valid asuite.xml file. LiberKey updater creates a backup copy of asuite.xml each time you start an update process. It saves 10 backups (ASuite.xml.010.bak is the most recent, ASuite.xml.001.bak is the oldest).

Try to identify the issue date, take one .bak file before this date and rename it as Asuite.xml (so, the .bak file will overwrite the asuite.xml which has the problem).

So, steps are :
- Exit LiberKey
- Rename your file \Apps\ASuite\asuite.xml in \Apps\ASuite\asuite_prob.xml (lets make a backup)
- Copy your \App\Asuite\ASuite.xml.XXX.bak to \Apps\ASuite\asuite.xml
- Launch LiberKey
- Test updates

Nota : if you have launched and applied 10 or more times LiberKey Updater, it remains only the solution N°2.

2nd solution (only if solution n°1 dit not work)

It is possible to recover the file asuite.xml identical to that delivered to your LiberKey (during the installation setup)
- Exit LiberKey
- Rename your file \Apps\ASuite\asuite.xml in \Apps\ASuite\asuite_prob.xml (lets make a backup)
- Copy the file Apps\ASuite\sos\asuite.xml in \Apps\ASuite
- Launch LiberKey

Disadvantages of this 2nd solution:
- You have to apply again all updates since the beginning
- Added applications from the online catalog must be re-installed
- The menus you may have created in "My Software" are lost
